Synopsis

All adventures start with a wild idea. This story follows the journey of five young Austrians on their attempt to travel through the step of Kazakhstan with a self-built sailing car for about 500 kilometres in order to reach the Aral Sea. Formerly the fourth largest lake in the world with an area of 68,000 km2, the Aral Sea began shrinking in the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects. By 1997, it had declined to 10% of its original size. Therefore a lot of old ships are stranded in desert land where the Aral Sea used to be. The goal of the five adventurers is to find these old ships with their wind-powered vehicle whilst exploring the history of the country. However, very soon the story becomes a matter of surviving one failure after another. A moving, realistic story of the unusual kind.
